Dr WHR Rivers, FRS (1864-1922) was a distinguished psychiatrist and social anthropologist who, during the years of the first world war, held the rank of captain in the RAMC. He treated soldiers at Craiglockart War Hospital in 1917, amongst whom were Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967) and Wilfred Owen (1893-1918). The methods employed by Captain Rivers are described in 'The Repression of War Experience' (Lancet, 2 Feb. 1918) and in Conflict and Dream (London, Kegan Paul, 1923). Rivers treated what was then known as Shell-Shock - the modern day equivalent being Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Before the start of the was, Rivers was closely involved in with Henry Head on nerve regeneration and was the director of the first two psychological laboratories in Britain. |
