The services offered include the following: Assessment, psychological debriefing or critical incident stress debriefing; treatment of acute traumatic stress reaction; treatment of prolonged stress reaction; treatment of post traumatic stress disorder and treatment of other conditions related to or triggered by traumatic stress such as depression, phobias and panic attacks.

The time-course of the syndrome is important, as PTSD may start soon after the traumatic event or may have delayed presentation. Although most individuals have stable symptoms, some may have fluctuating symptoms meeting the diagnostic criteria at some time and not at others. However, in practice, it is often helpful to be able to talk about the processes that may be involved in PTSD even if the individual fails to meet all the diagnostic criteria.

Assessment

The initial assessment will be an individual private interview which may last between 1 and 3 hours which will depend on whether or not the patient feels comfortable with telling their story. Rating scales of general functioning will be used and specific scales which rate depression, anxiety or specific PTSD symptoms may also be used. The rating scales allow both patient and therapist to determine changes which take place during a course of treatment. During the assessment phase, there will not usually be a physical examination or blood tests although these may be carried out either by us or the patients GP if it is necessary to do so.

Benefits

The team at the Rivers Centre will also be able to offer practical advice to clients with regards to the types of benefits that they may be eligible for and who to contact. We will also be able to give advice about who to contact with regards to legal issues and any medical follow up queries
